straight weeks before the disastrous presidential debate for president obama that the race was other than. president obama had already won it, just as women were tuning in they were told don't bother, it's already over. so that debate actually mattered more than it normally would because they encountered an a rot -- mitt romney they weren't expected an barack obama they had never been seen. the third reason is that women, this whole matter of abortion is porn to women but it's not in the top five in anyone's polling. it's a great conversation spark and it's very important to women but it's also backed in the cake. meaning those swing women already know where romney, ryan are on abortion and where obama-biden are on abortion to a large degree. they're waiting to hear and more importantly to see something outside of that issue. and let's just see, does anybody ever talk about men's issues. what are these women's issues. all issues are men's issues. i want to put out that i think all issues should be women's issues. >> brown: that si a fair point. i always think about asking as a general que

between vice presidential candidates aren't supposed to matter but after president obama's poor debate performance last weeknight's faceoff between joe biden and paul ryan has turned into a high stakes affair. in colorado president obama held a slim lead in september now romney has a one-point edge. in wisconsin the president was leading by six points last month, he leads romney by just three points now. in virginia the president continues to hold on to a small lead. tara mergener is in washington following all of this. >> reporter: good morning. boy the pressure sure is on tonight particularly for joe biden who will be trying to gain ground following that first presidential debate. paul ryan will be trying to keep up his campaign's new momentum. paul ryan arrived in kentucky ahead of his first nationally televised debate. the number two man on the gop ticket told reporters earlier in florida voters will see a clear choice when he faces off against vice president joe biden. >> joe biden has been on the stage before. he's been on these big stages. it's my first time. what he can't run f

the presidential election for a second. the contenders, mitt romney and obama. romney is getting a bum from his performance in the debate. when you look at the swing states, seems to be doing a little better. is this sustainable and does it put more pressure on ryan to have a really good night? >> it is not sustainable. i have a specific reason for that. when you look at this data when you see is the romney campaign was a great performance by romney and a bad one by the president. that shows up and there has been movement. the bulk of a movement has been with women. if you look at the polls, women are in a dead heat between romney and obama. the only republican or the last republican to win against the democrat was george herbert walker bush in 1988. i don't think that will happen. what will happen is you will start to see women shifting back not as far as they were prior to the debate but that will retract a little bit. ryan has to go out and keep those women and keeps that moved. joe biden -- these guys will be talking to women tonight. gerri: as they should. we should be at the center of eve
